About Us

"Our mission is to promote the craft of tatting and spread it like kudzu across the South!"

Welcome to the website of the Palmetto Tatters! We are a group of folks in South Carolina (and some from North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennesee, too) who were brought together by one common thread...our love of tatting. Tatting is a craft that has become popularly known as a "lost" or "dying" art, but we know better! And, we are dedicated to demonstrating, teaching, and doing anything else we can to educate the people around us about this beautiful craft.

What is Tatting?

  • Tatting is the art of making handmade lace by looping and knotting a single thread on a small shuttle or special needle
  • Tatting can be documented approximately to the early 19th century.

(Thanks to Lori Dunlap for these tatting examples.)

How to Tat: In this video clip, you will see the basic method of tatting. Learn to tat with Georgia Seitz. Basic Tatting Video Clip. (Will take about 30 minutes or longer to download. You may wish to save a copy to your computer for repeated viewing.) If you wish to share this video, please refer your friends to this web page. Thank you.

Basic tatting is done in many ways. If you wish to see demos of more methods, we refer you to our Tatting Hands video which we have for purchase as a fundraiser to help fund our teaching of tatting.

Membership in PTG is almost free....we just ask for one simple butterfly to share at our SC State Fair booth once a year. Of course, members are more than welcome to donate more than one!

Folks wishing more information about the Palmetto Tatters Guild may email our membership person or write us at Palmetto Tatters Guild, P.O. Box 1597, Lexington, SC 29071. You may request to be added to our membership and to be added to the email newsletter listing.
