October 15, 2000: The big news of late for the Palmetto Tatters, and in fact the reason for our organization, was the First Annual Tatting Demo Day at the South Carolina State Fair. The fair was held in Columbia, SC from October 5 through October 15.
One of the PTs inquired about entering some tatted items this year, and was told that tatting only made it into this year's judging categories by one vote! We thought this was outrageous, so of course we had to do something. The same PT that was told about the near elimination of the tatting category decided we should hold a tatting demonstration and exhibit booth for one day at the fair, and that's what we did on Friday, October 13.
A basket full of pre-wound cardboard shuttles was available for those who wished to try tatting, and boy, did we have students! We displayed several examples of traditional and modern tatting, gave away hundreds of butterflies, and shared our love of tatting with anyone who even looked sideways at our booth. We also enjoyed the fellowship of sharing tatting with fellow tatters, and some of us e-pals even met for the first time In Real Life that day. We also must mention that several of the first and second place ribbons given out for entries this year were taken by Palmetto Tatters. =)
