1) How long have you been tatting?
I have been tatting for about 39 years.

2) Are you currently working on a tatting piece?
I work on some tatted project almost every day, if at all possible. My husband and I are basketmakers, and much of my time is spent producing baskets, tatting along with other needlework, and gourds for several shows each year.

3) What is your favorite color?
My favorite is green.

4) Where did you learn to tat?
I taught myself to tat because I had a book that was a Teach Yourself To Crochet, Knit and Tat. We had been transferred to Anderson from Spartanburg and I knew no one. I already crocheted, so I worked on knitting next. Then I wondered what was this tatting? It took me some time to figure out what your hands were to do from drawings in the book. And, of course, my method of tatting now is nothing like it was then. My mother was my first student 39 yrs. ago. I have been teaching classes for the last 19 yrs. I do a little needlework judging at our county fair and am just getting started on my Teachers Certification for Tatting which I am very excited about.

5) How many tatting books do you have?
I have no idea how many tatting books I have as they never all seem to be in the same place.

6) Do you have a thread preference?
I do prefer the smaller 6-ply or Cordonnet threads sizes 40 to 100, just because I like the feel of it and the preciseness it gives to the work. But when making something soft like baby bootees I use Pearl Cotton.

7) What do you prefer to tat?
I have no preference as to what I tat, just that I enjoy it. I am more of a process person rather than a project person. I do not ever keep anything I make. It is either for my children, grandchildren, friends or for shows to sell. I am trying to put some of the things up that I do to be given to my grandchildren. I am even working on linen handkerchiefs with blue tatting (something blue) for their weddings. They are just 10, 7, 3, and 1!!! The 10 yr. old tats and the 7 yr. old is asking to learn now.

8) Do you make any other lace?
I crochet, knit, do hardanger, and would love to learn bobbin lace.

9) Have you entered any tatting or lacemaking contest?
I have not entered any contests. Guess I have been too busy to know that any existed, but would be interested. I cannot enter our county fair as I teach and judge.

10) Do you make or design your own patterns?
I do like to play around with designs. But, I really like to rework older patterns, making any needed corrections, or figuring an easier or better way of working it.
I think that is because I enjoy the design process Even in quilting I especially enjoy the drafting of the patterns . Although, I love to quilt also, my husband says I should just stick with one thing!!! But I believe that would be impossible!

Marie is a very gracious volunteer teacher this year with LOADS of experience, as you can see, and she is preparing for the GLLG Teacher Certifications.
